What is P-EBT?
Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) is a federal program providing food benefits to families with children who have lost access to free or reduced-price meals due to school closures. For the 2024 summer, Tennessee is continuing its efforts to support families in need through the Summer EBT program.
Key Dates and Details for P-EBT 2024 in Tennessee
1. Program Launch and Benefit Amount
The Summer EBT program, which took over from P-EBT, will officially launch in Tennessee for the summer of 2024. Eligible families will receive a one-time payment of $120 per child, which can be used to buy groceries at participating SNAP EBT stores.
2. Automatic Enrollment
Your family will be automatically enrolled if:
- Your child was part of a household receiving SNAP, Families First (TANF), or TennCare during the 2023-24 school year;
- OR your child received free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) because you filled out and got approved for the NSLP application during the 2023-24 school year.
3. Application Requirement
You’ll need to apply if:
- Your child attends a school where all students eat for free under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) but you don’t receive SNAP, TANF, or TennCare;
- OR they attended an NSLP participating school but are not directly certified and don’t have an approved NSLP application on file.
4. Applying for Benefits
If your child isn’t automatically enrolled, visit the DHS Parent Portal by August 15, 2024 to apply. Complete the application online. If you can’t access the portal, you can apply by phone at 1-833-772-TDHS (8347). There is no paper application option.
5. Receiving the Benefits
Eligible families should expect to receive their Summer EBT cards by the end of June 2024. Note that the benefits will not be loaded onto SNAP EBT or old P-EBT cards; new cards will be mailed to each eligible child.
- The benefits must be used within 122 days before they expire, so use the card as soon as it’s received!
6. Updating Your Address
Ensure your address is correct in the Parent Portal to receive your card at the right place. If you need assistance, contact One DHS Customer Service at 1-833-772-8347.
